Mother and Child in the Meadow, print of an original acrylic color painting on canvas.
The painting is part of my Mother and Child series of paintings. I started this series in early 2021 when I had Mother's Day on my mind.
For this painting, I wanted subjects where the mother and child had different skin colors. I, myself, am a mother of three and have darker skin than all three of my children. My own mother was born in Malaysia and has darker skin than mine. My father is Caucasian American and has much lighter skin than mine. When I was little, I saw very few images of multiracial families. Not only would I have benefited from seeing art depicting mixed race, blended and adopted children, but I know many other people feel the same as I do about the importance of seeing yourself in art. I make a concerted effort to represent diverse families in my own art, first and foremost for my kids' sake.
For this particular mother and daughter pair, I was thinking of a wonderful couple who adopted their two daughters from China. While I haven't seen their family in years, I remember the mother as a playful parent who laughed frequently with her children. I used models to stand in for the family I know personally.
